Shop owners'' personal credit takes hits for shop reasons — the slow winter went on the cards, the build-out ran over. If you''re sitting at 500–620, the bank menu is mostly closed. The shop menu isn''t. Repair businesses carry two structural advantages: hard, financeable equipment and revenue that documents itself through card settlements.
What actually approves
Equipment financing (the underrated one). Lifts, alignment racks, diag platforms, compressors — the asset is the collateral, which is exactly what lets lenders stretch on credit. Sub-600 approvals routinely happen with 10–20% down and a rate premium. For anything that is physically a thing, price this lane first: it''s usually a fraction of advance pricing, and Section 179 expensing may apply (ask your accountant). Our lift financing guide runs the per-bay math.
Revenue-based funding. Underwritten on bank deposits and card volume, not FICO — low-500s scores fund when deposits are steady (roughly $7,500+/month, a few months of history, NSFs under control). The trade is factor-rate pricing: triple-digit effective APRs. Two survival rules: know the real number before signing — two minutes with our factor rate calculator — and if your counter work is card-heavy, ask for percentage-of-sales repayment so slow weeks take smaller payments.
Secured and specialty products. Invoice factoring against fleet/insurer receivables (the receivable is the credit, not you), CD-secured lines, and title-secured equipment refis on machines you own outright.
Realistically closed: unsecured bank lines, most fintech LOCs under ~580, and SBA in practice below ~620.
The honest cost spread
The same $30,000, six months:
- 700+ credit, line of credit at ~25% APR → roughly $2,000–3,500 in interest.
- 550 credit, 1.35–1.45 advance → $10,500–13,500 in fees.
Call it a five-figure annual credit penalty if you borrow twice a year. The menu above gets you funded today; the plan below is what actually pays.
The 12-month climb-out
- Current on everything personal first — recent lates hurt far more than old marks; dispute genuine report errors.
- Guard the operating account. NSFs and negative balance days are the first read every revenue-based underwriter makes. Two clean quarters improve your offers at any score.
- Build the business file in parallel: EIN banking, D-U-N-S number, parts-supplier net-30s paid early (they report), a business card used lightly. Future underwriting can then lean on the shop, not the owner.
- Borrow deliberately, once. If premium money is necessary, tie it to something with a return — a bay online, a rig that books work — and refuse the reflex renewal.
- Refinance on a written date. Six to twelve clean months → term debt or a line that retires the expensive balance.
See what the shop qualifies for
Score is one input; deposits and equipment are the others. Start a funding request — about five minutes, free, no obligation, and checking won''t touch your credit.
